Tanzania’s Underwater World Is Insane
Warm Indian Ocean water, healthy reefs, and gentle giants — Tanzania quietly has some of East Africa’s best diving. Here are the spots you don’t want to miss.
1. Mafia Island – The Whale Shark Capital
Swim with the biggest fish in the ocean (October–March).
50+ pristine dive sites inside Africa’s largest marine park.
Highlights: Chole Bay reefs, Kinasi Wall drift, Juani Channel whale shark snorkelling.
Best time: November–February (peak whale shark season & calm seas).
Perfect for: everyone — snorkellers can join whale shark trips, divers get untouched walls.
2. Pemba Island – Wild, Deep & Uncrowded
Pemba’s reefs are what Zanzibar’s were 30 years ago — untouched and full of big stuff.
Highlights: North Horn (hammerheads), Emerald Reef sea fans, Misali Island’s famous Coral Garden.
Best time: August–March.
Perfect for: experienced divers who want zero crowds and dramatic drop-offs.
3. Mnemba Atoll (Zanzibar) – Tropical Fish Paradise
Shallow, colourful, and called “East Africa’s Tropical Fish Capital” for good reason.
Highlights: endless schools of snapper, turtles, dolphin pods just outside the reef.
Best time: year-round (early morning dives beat the tide).
Perfect for: beginners, underwater photographers, Open Water certification.
4. Nungwi (North Zanzibar) – Whale Migration Central
From September to early November, humpback whales migrate right past the reef.
You can hear them singing underwater — unforgettable.
Also great for manta rays and occasional whale sharks in December–February.
5. Misali Island (Pemba Day Trip) – The Hidden Coral Garden
Tiny uninhabited island with ridiculously healthy shallow reefs.
Turtles on every dive, macro life everywhere.
Perfect half-day escape from Pemba.
Bonus Freshwater Surprise: Lake Tanganyika
World’s second-deepest lake, 95 % of all cichlid species found nowhere else.
Clear water, dramatic walls, and you can combine it with chimpanzee trekking in Mahale or Gombe.
Best time: June–October (dry season).
Quick Season Guide
- Whale sharks (Mafia): October–March (November = sweet spot)
- Best visibility & calm seas: June–October + December–February
- Quietest & cheapest diving: March–May and November
