You Can Climb Year-Round — But Some Months Are Pure Gold

Kilimanjaro sits right on the equator, so temperatures are surprisingly stable. What really changes everything is rain and crowds.

The Two Golden Windows (Dry Seasons)

  • January – mid-March
  • June – October

Clear skies, dry trails, highest success rates. These are the months 90 % of climbers choose.

The Secret Sweet Spots (Shoulder Seasons)

  • Early January (post-New-Year calm)
  • Early–mid March
  • Early June
  • Late September – early October

Almost the same weather as peak season, but with way fewer people and often lower prices.

The Rainy Seasons (Not as Bad as You Think)

  • Late March – May (long rains)
  • Mid-November – mid-December (short rains)

Lush green rainforest, almost empty trails, dramatic snowy summits, and big discounts. Perfect if you have good rain gear and love solitude.

Month-by-Month Cheat Sheet 2025–2026

January – Warm, dry, busy after New Year. Great views.

February – Warmest month, clear skies, very popular.

Early March – Still excellent, crowds drop fast.

Late March – May – Heavy rain, slippery, quiet, cheapest.

June – Crisp, dry, climbing numbers rising but still calm.

July–August – Peak season, dry, cool, very busy (book 12 months ahead).

September – Guide favourite: perfect weather + noticeably quieter.

October – Dry until late in the month, peaceful trails.

November – Short rains, green and empty, magical atmosphere.

December – Rainy until mid-month, then Christmas/New Year rush.

How to Have the Mountain Almost to Yourself

  1. Climb in early March, early June, or late September
  2. Pick the quieter routes: Rongai or Northern Circuit
  3. Start mid-week (Wednesday/Thursday) instead of weekend
  4. Avoid full-moon and holiday periods

When NOT to Climb

Only avoid April & first half of May if you hate daily rain and mud. Even then, plenty of experienced climbers love the challenge and solitude.

SerengetiNexus Top Picks

  • Best weather + manageable crowds → February & September
  • Best value + quiet trails → Early March or November
  • Full-moon magic → September 07 2025 or July 10 2025
