You Can Climb Year-Round — But Some Months Are Pure Gold

Kilimanjaro sits right on the equator, so temperatures are surprisingly stable. What really changes everything is rain and crowds.

The Two Golden Windows (Dry Seasons)

  • January – mid-March
  • June – October

Clear skies, dry trails, highest success rates. These are the months 90 % of climbers choose.

The Secret Sweet Spots (Shoulder Seasons)

  • Early January (post-New-Year calm)
  • Early–mid March
  • Early June
  • Late September – early October

Almost the same weather as peak season, but with way fewer people and often lower prices.

The Rainy Seasons (Not as Bad as You Think)

  • Late March – May (long rains)
  • Mid-November – mid-December (short rains)

Lush green rainforest, almost empty trails, dramatic snowy summits, and big discounts. Perfect if you have good rain gear and love solitude.

Month-by-Month Cheat Sheet 2025–2026

January – Warm, dry, busy after New Year. Great views.

February – Warmest month, clear skies, very popular.

Early March – Still excellent, crowds drop fast.

Late March – May – Heavy rain, slippery, quiet, cheapest.

June – Crisp, dry, climbing numbers rising but still calm.

July–August – Peak season, dry, cool, very busy (book 12 months ahead).

September – Guide favourite: perfect weather + noticeably quieter.

October – Dry until late in the month, peaceful trails.

November – Short rains, green and empty, magical atmosphere.

December – Rainy until mid-month, then Christmas/New Year rush.

How to Have the Mountain Almost to Yourself

  1. Climb in early March, early June, or late September
  2. Pick the quieter routes: Rongai or Northern Circuit
  3. Start mid-week (Wednesday/Thursday) instead of weekend
  4. Avoid full-moon and holiday periods

When NOT to Climb

Only avoid April & first half of May if you hate daily rain and mud. Even then, plenty of experienced climbers love the challenge and solitude.

Serengeti Nexus Top Picks

Frequently Asked Questions: Kilimanjaro Timing

What is the absolute best month to climb Kilimanjaro?

February and September are widely considered the best months. February offers warm temperatures, clear skies, and slightly lower crowds than January. September has perfect weather, is noticeably quieter than July–August, and often has better visibility than the very hot February summit nights.

Can beginners climb Kilimanjaro in the rainy season?

Yes, but with caveats. The rainforest section becomes slippery, and the cold dampness adds to the challenge. Beginners should choose the Lemosho or Rongai routes in the rainy season, as they tend to be drier than Machame. Proper waterproof gear is essential. If this is your first high-altitude trek, we recommend a dry-season climb for higher confidence and better acclimatization conditions.

How far in advance should I book a Kilimanjaro climb?

For July–August and January–February (peak months), book 12 months in advance. For September, October, and March, 6 months is usually sufficient. For shoulder and green season months, 3 months typically works, though earlier is always better for route and camp availability.

Does the weather on Kilimanjaro match the general Tanzania forecast?

Not exactly. Kilimanjaro creates its own microclimate. Even during Tanzania's "dry season," you can experience afternoon clouds, strong winds at high altitude, and sudden temperature drops above 4,000m. The summit can be -10°C to -20°C at night in any month. Always pack for extreme cold, regardless of the season.

Is it better to climb during full moon?

Full moon climbs are magical — the crater illuminates without a headlamp, and the ice fields glow silver. However, they are popular and fill up fast. We recommend booking full-moon departures 12–18 months in advance. The next full moons for Kilimanjaro summit nights in 2026: February 12, March 14, September 7, October 6.
